Building a pond with sleepers is one of the simplest and most rewarding DIY projects to take on. The whole idea is to create a habitat for fish so that they have a place to hide at night and sleep. Sleepers are not that difficult to build. And once you’ve got everything put up, there is little maintenance to worry about except for keeping some items covered to avoid dirt or leaves from entering your pond.
A landscape pond has the advantage of being both more attractive to potential buyers and easier to maintain. With a landscape pond, less thought needs to be put into creating the water features and structures. A landscape pond also makes use of all the space that would be required for a larger water garden. It takes more work to set up a large water feature in a small garden pond.
But the biggest advantage of landscaping ponds is their flexibility in relation to size. The bigger the garden pond, the larger the bed of water. If your water garden is big enough, you can even build a small pond house there. Your pond house can hold as many as four garden ponds – two smaller ones side by side and the larger one on top of the smaller ones.
The bed of water in a landscape pond can be kept clear using a simple filtration system. But if you want more than that, you can add features such as waterfalls or fountains. You don’t have to stop here. In fact, you can keep building up the pond, adding water features and bedding plants. Adding structures such as steps, waterfalls, or fountains will help the pond house look more appealing to fish and wildlife.
Another great way to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your pond house is to add some stone or brickwork to the sides. This will provide some interesting textures for your pond garden. It also serves to protect the structure from wind and rain. Some stone areas will need work and sealing every year. Others will need only sanding and leveling. But whatever you do, don’t use any harsh abrasive material on the sides of the pond house – this could damage the surfaces.
It might be a good idea to give your pond house a modern look. That’s not to say that you have to ditch all antique pond furniture. Just change things around to give the house a more contemporary look. You can paint it in a light color so it doesn’t appear too industrial. You can also use white water for the swimming pool and add a contemporary aerator or water fountain. It’s a shame to leave these things behind because they will be passed over when people see the lovely house they didn’t realize was there.
Look for a manufacturer who makes sturdy buildable furniture. Your pond house will be sitting there for at least five years. It would be a good idea to make it last as long as possible. With durable material and good craftsmanship, you won’t have any worries about it. A well constructed pond house will also have the comfort of an indoor/outdoor patio.
There are many different types of materials from which to choose. One good option is to purchase a used pond house with the slats cut out. If you can find one that’s still in pretty decent shape, that would be perfect. Otherwise, if you’re really feeling ambitious you could always build a new one. Just remember to use quality materials and workmanship to ensure that it will last you for years to come.
